Poet Laureate- Activities

On Thursday, November 17, 2011 everyone is invited to celebrate the transforming power of language during the free event, “Words Can Change Lives”, taking place at the Northside Library, 1500 27th Avenue, Kenosha, WI from 6:30-8:00 PM.  This event will formally recognize Angie Aker as Kenosha Poet Laureate, as it will also provide an evening of entertainment and insight into the power of words.  A lineup of guest poets and other authors is being assembled.  Racine Poet Laureate Stephen Kalmar II is scheduled to appear and read from his work.

For 2012, Aker will work with authors of all ages to raise awareness of the privilege and responsibility of voting in the United States through a new writing and reading program, Kenosha Votes! 2012 will be a major year in national, regional and local politics, including races for Mayoral and aldermanic seats and the race to become the President of the United States. The informed choices that each citizen makes in the voting booth can shape the future of our city, our country and the world.

Aker is the founder of the program, SpeakUP & SpeakOUT!, raising awareness and providing support and a voice against domestic violence.  SpeakUP & SpeakOUT! activities may be scheduled during Aker's term as Poet Laureate, 2011-13.
