What Is Southport Press?
Southport Press is a small press publishing initiative, which operates as a service of Kenosha Community Media, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
It works to showcase the arts, history, and culture of Kenosha and surrounding region. It provides opportunities for the public to become engaged beyond creating and submitting work to a publisher; instead, it allows them to become an important part of the process of developing ideas into tangible products and activities.
What Is A Small Press?
A small press is a publisher of fiction or non-fiction which generally releases a very small number of titles each year, has low annual sales income, and is independent of the corporate publishing industry.
Are You A Vanity Press?
No. There's an important distinction between a small press and a vanity press. A vanity press sells its service--publishing books--to authors in return for a fee. Vanity presses may print books on-demand or require the client/author to become the sales force for his or her own book.
A small press selects the projects or titles it wishes to and is capable of producing into a book, edits its content, and becomes its sales and marketing force.
Will You Publish My Novel?
Sorry, no.
Instead, Southport Press focuses on collaborative projects to raise appreciation and awareness of artists and writers, primarily in the Kenosha/Racine area and Northern Illinois.
Southport Press' operations are sustained through book sales, charitable donations to the Press, auctions of artwork from published materials, and donations to projects and events presented by Southport Press.
It currently lacks capital to consider unsolicited submissions for works that are not a part of a collaborative atmosphere which showcase area authors and artists and help to nourishes the creative culture in Kenosha.
What's A Creative Culture?
Cultural creatives are considered the leading edge creators of a new culture in America. According to the Website, CulturalCreatives, org, they care deeply about ecology and saving the planet, about relationships, peace, social justice, and about self-actualization, spirituality and self-expression. They're activists, volunteers, and contributors to good causes.
While many artists could be considered cultural creatives, the term is not limited to the arts world. The Website, MetroModernMedia.com, offers that "creativity is not just for artists, architects, writers and musicians. Creativity happens in many places. Parents can be creative as they explore better ways to raise their children. Storeowners can be creative in marketing their wares. Computer programmers can be creative. Any occupation can and should be the focus of the creative mind."
